Favorite gift ideas for kids

I don’t know about you, but when we decided to incorporate a playroom for our kids in the basement remodel, we had this fantasy of never stepping on a tiny toy or seeing crap everywhere.  Epic fail.

We are trying to get away from all the toys taking over our house.  When the kids aren’t looking, something gets tossed into the donation box or the garbage if it no longer works or is missing parts.  We are also paying close attention to what they have really, truely outgrown and what they no longer play with.

Now that their birthday and Christmas are coming up, very quickly I might add, everyone is asking what our kids want.  They don’t need for anything so it’s a matter of what they enjoy doing that isn’t going to add to the mess we are trying to get rid of.

Now that we have had the playroom for about 2 years, my mind is starting to go in another direction.  Surprise, I know.  So, based on those thoughts, here are some ideas on kids gifts that won’t be forgotten about.

Tego Shyhook Magnetic blocks. These are amazing!  So many to choose from, no lead, no plastic, non-toxic, water-based lacquer finish, and no small parts.  All of the sets work together so there is no limit to what kids can do with these!

Gonge Riverstones.   These are great for improving coordination and balance.
Each side of the stones vary in steepness and difficulty and the rubber rim keeps them from slipping.  They are stackable for easy storage so you don’t have too see them all over the floor!

Good ‘ol fashioned board games.  I know, I know… these have small pieces.  BUT they promote family togetherness.  Break out a board game, make a favorite snack and enjoy each other’s company.

Alex art supplies. There are so many options with this brand!  Best known for Shrinky Dinks and Slinky, Alex Brands has expanded and offers enjoyment for eveyone from infants to tweens (adults too!). All toys/art supplies are non-toxic and BPA-free.

Foodstirs.com. We love this in our house!  We made the rainbow pancakes shown above and the kids were thrilled!  Not only did the end result look amazing, they were delicious and super fun to make!

Foodstirs was started by Sarah Michelle Gellar (yes, Buffy), Galit Laibow, and Greg Fleishman. All of their ingredients are authentic, organic and never genetically modified.  They  send you everything you need, (except the perishables-eggs, milk, etc.), even the tools needed to make the recipe (cookie cutters, muffin liners, NOT a Kitchenaid mixer!). They offer subscriptions or you can purchase kits and mixes whenever you’d like.

I hope this gives you a few ideas.  Kids don’t have to be innundated with toys upon toys to be happy and entertained.  Some family time and a few things that extend their imaginations!
