We’ve had our lake house for a little over 14 years. Hard to believe it’s been that long, but it has. There is so much work that has gone into this house that I couldn’t even begin to list it all. Almost every inch has been redone.
We couldn’t stay in the house while the work was being done so we did what we could to get it habitable, painted, loaded it full of second-hand furniture so we could start enjoying it!
The time finally came this year where all of us decided to give it a much-needed facelift, make it look like an actual retreat. It was a lot of work, but definitely worth it.
The trim and doors were extremely dark so we painted them all white and that was a huge improvement! All of the door hardware came off, was cleaned, sprayed a nice bronze color and replaced (you’ll see this in a later post). Curtains and rods were tossed, the new rods were installed higher and lighter-colored curtains were purchased.
There are some non-affiliate links at the bottom of the post that will send you to all the fun items that were purchased for this makeover.
This is the entry. We used to use it as an extra bedroom because the double doors weren’t there. The entry door was moved a few years ago from the living room to this space to make a designated entry area. Everything in this space was a catch-all. We really needed more storage in the house so we needed to create a space to hang coats and keys, as well as an area for shoes, bags and miscellaneous getaway stuff.
The living room isn’t huge and with the bar seating there, we lose even more space. We really wanted it to be a gathering place without feeling stuffed. The fireplace was added last year for the cold winter nights and a little extra ambiance.
The bedroom was CRAZY! The plaster wasn’t holding up very well, but we didn’t want to get into a much bigger project, so we scraped and painted. Call me lazy, but we didn’t want a gigantic mess and it wasn’t a really big deal. It was dark, dingy and very uninviting. It’s right off the kitchen so we wanted to flow with the rest of the newly updated house.
I’ve decided to do a separate post on the kitchen and bathroom since some work is still being done, but we are super happy with how everything is turning out. It feels like a completely different house and super comfortable to be in.
